I have seven employees and some of them have asked me about the possiblity of telecommuting to save gas. It would also be very "green" and we're a pretty environmentally-savvy company.

I'm sure there are many options that allow individuals to work from home but still have access to their files. What are the most cost-effective for a small business?

You are correct. There are many options available. The right option depends on a few variables - such as your current network structure (server or peer-to-peer, Internet speed) and applications that need accessed (Quickbooks, email, etc). If you have Microsoft Small Business Server already in place, then you already have the ability to setup a VPN for the employees to access desktops and applications remotely. If not, other VPN options are available such as direct remote access software (ie GoToMyPC, LogMeIn), client/server VPN software, and published applications via the internet.

In addition to the network access portion, you can also use VoIP to create a remote office from the voice side, meaning that the remote worker has voice access to other employees and company telephone lines from the remote location. Prices are getting much more reasonable than in the past, to the point where small businesses can afford the outlay and actually save money in the long run.
